ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDMike graduated from Vancouver College, a Catholic boys high school in 1960. He graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His majors were Math, English and History. Mike completed a year of professional teacher education and was certified to teach in BC in 1966. He returned to UBC later in his career and completed a Masters Degree in 1984. His focus was on the philosophical foundations of public education. He worked with Leroy Daniels, Jerry Coombs and Murray Elliott. His MA thesis was "Political Basis for Child-Raising."
Mike completed his PhD in 1993. His PhD thesis was "Evaluating Attempts fo Influence Public Education." Contact us for availability. Mike's full title is "Dr. Michael Louis Grant, PhD." During his academic career he participated in many different research and conceptual projects, including work with the Canadian Charter. initial work with TC2 Consortium on critical thinking. He was also the B.C. deans' respresentative on the B.C. College of Teachers during its early turbulent years. |
CAREERWhile he was a student, Mike drove a Coca Cola truck and also taught scuba diving. His career in education began in 1966 in Alert Bay on the west coast of British Columbia. He also taught in Port Alice on Northern Vancouver Island and was school principal at St. Francis de Salles Parish School in Burnaby, Holberg Elementary School on Northern Vancouver Island, and McLeese Lake Elementary in the Cariboo Chilcotin School District. Mike became Supervisor of Instruction in the Lake Cowichan School District in 1975. During his teaching career, Mike literally taught every grade and most subjects - from high school Math, English and Physics to Kindergarten, Home Economics and French. He was a pioneer in the the use of open learning classrooms and the inclusion of all children in regular classrooms. While working on his PhD at UBC, Mike was hired as a consultant for the Canadian Cooperative Association . His assignments included missions to work with people in the Philippines, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana and South Africa on the management of co-operative, community-based micro-credit institutions. Mike joined the Education Faculty at Malaspina University College (renamed Vancouver Island University in 2008) in 1986 and served as Dean from 1994 until his retirement from full-time work in 2007. Among many community volunteer activities, Mike was president of the Mid-Island Coop and active on the Regional Health Council. Mike has team-taught an online course on "Research Methods from a Postmodern Perspective" for San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science with Penny. |
